When working with babies safety should always be a priority. Practicing Newborn Photography safety is no exception. Many new parents want to capture those precious first days at home as a family, so as a photographer you should be honored to be part of the experience
During the photo session, it’s important to give the client peace of mind and communicate with the parents. Most clients are first time parents so they can be a little anxious handing their baby to someone else.
Follow Newborn Photography safety best practices and tips for a smooth session to get the best shots for such a precious time.
Best Practices
- Always clean your studio before a session.
- Regularly wash all fabric and wraps that will come into contact with the naked baby.
- When warming the studio, make sure the heater is not directly blowing on the baby.
- Make sure you have short, filed nails so as to not scratch or poke the baby.
- Do not wear any large rings or jewelry that can scratch or harm the baby.
- Wash your hands thoroughly before touching the baby.
- As a precaution, ask the parents if they prefer you wear a mask during the session.
- Be sure to not wrap the baby too tightly in blankets or wraps as it could make it more difficult for the baby to breathe.
- Move slowly with the baby, and don’t force the baby into any poses they are not comfortable with.
Getting the Shots
- Basket Shots: When shooting overhead of the baby, always wear a neck strap for the camera so that the baby is safe should it slip out of your hands.
- Use a Spotter: Certain poses require a spotter. This can be an assistant that you are comfortable working with and that is also comfortable working with babies. If an assistant is not available, the parents are always happy to help.
- Shoot After a Feeding: While it may be hard to predict how a newborn will act, often a baby will be calmer and a little sleepy after a full feeding. Let the parents know of this in advance so they can plan accordingly.
Tips for Working With a Newborn Baby
As a professional photographer, you may find that a newborn is your most challenging subject to shoot. Babies can be unpredictable and they aren’t able to take directions. Even toddlers can take a few directions.
Below are a few Newborn photography tips to help you navigate working with a newborn during the photo shoot:
- If the baby is fussy, there is always a reason, perhaps a break is needed for the baby and also a feed.
- No need to rush a session.
- Never leave the baby unattended in a prop or on the posing table
Finally
When considering Newborn Photography safety, above all use common sense. If you are questioning whether or not to do something, err on the side of caution. Above all else, ask the parents for help with the baby or if it’s acceptable for you to do something.
As long as you keep these key tips in mind, you’ll do great during your newborn photography session!
