When’s The Best Time To Do A Maternity Photoshoot?
Moms can participate in outdoor maternity photoshoots at any point in their pregnancy that they feel comfortable doing so. The most common time to schedule these photoshoots is between the 28 and 36 week mark of pregnancy. At this point, there tends to be a nice and round, visible belly, which can be showcased in a plethora of beautiful ways.
I usually do the outdoor sessions straight after doing the in studio maternity session.
Outdoor maternity Photography Preparation
One of the most important parts of preparing for an outdoor photoshoot is to scout locations. Finding a marriage between a physically attractive location and a practical one can be a challenge, but it’s not impossible.
I always try to find locations that meet my client’s desires that are also as close to my studio as possible, or are at least relatively close should we need to pivot locations quickly. Chat with the mom to find out what vibe she wants, what type of wardrobe she’s considering so nothing is too baggy, and what types of poses and shots she wants.
Poses For outdoor Maternity Photography
There are a few classic poses often seen in maternity shoots depending on the woman’s comfort level. For instance, there are often standing shots with the subject holding her belly, either looking down at it in admiration or looking at the camera. Capturing these shots at different angles can create some gorgeous photos.
A flattering standing pose that allows a woman to showcase her pregnant belly is standing with the leg closest to the camera placed slightly forward and bent. You can also take some sitting shots if she’s comfortable getting up and down, and depending on the season and the weather. You could also bring a prop chair along; preferably a nice one that blends in with the natural scenery.
You should also plan for shots she may want with her partner and any other kids they might have, showcasing their growing family in a series of posed and candid shots together. Be sure you have a plan set out with the client long before you start shooting so you know what kind of poses she likes and how she wants the overall theme of her photos to look.
Tips For Maternity Photoshoots In Parks
A park is by far one of the most coveted locations for a beautiful maternity photoshoot. The backdrop of a park offers a lot of naturally occurring beauty in the background, making the entire photoshoot have a much more organic element to it. No matter what time of the year it is, parks are always stunning.
Not all parks are ideal for photoshoots, however. You’ll want to consider if there’s any accommodations such as a washroom that allow for a change of maternity dress. Should there be nothing available, but you managed to find the perfect park, you’ll want to bring along some kind of portable tent to allow for privacy.
Maternity Photoshoots In Urban Settings
For a maternity photoshoot that is a bit more creative, an urban setting could be ideal. Urban settings can be simple against modern buildings, or can be romantic against more classic architecture. One important component of these photoshoots is to find adequate parking to avoid making the mom-to-be have to walk everywhere.
Summer Maternity Photoshoots
Summertime is easily one of the most picturesque seasons, but the heat is no fun when you’re all dressed up, wearing a face of makeup, trying to feel beautiful. You don’t want to go out for a shoot when the sun is at its brightest; it’ll not only make photos way too bright and overexposed, but it will also be way too hot.
Instead, consider scheduling a summer outdoor photoshoot about an hour to an hour and a half before sunset. The lighting will be naturally stunning, and the air should start cooling down. Be sure you have plenty of water and some nutritious snacks nearby for mom as well to keep her energy and hydration levels high.
Regardless of the season, if the weather ends up taking a turn on the day of our scheduled outdoor shoot, do not worry; I always have a back up plan in mind. However, if your dream is to have outdoor photos taken, I am more than willing to reschedule in order to keep your dreams alive.
Other Tips For Outdoor Photoshoots
Whether in a park, field, or other type of naturally dense space, tall grass can make for some creative photos. What’s important to note is whether or not the area is known for having high concentrations of pollen or ticks as that’s the last thing anyone wants to navigate, especially a pregnant person.
Be sure that mom has a pair of comfortable shoes to walk in, even if she wants to change into some heels or fancier shoes for the photos themselves. Try and work efficiently when working with a pregnant person as they could be experiencing any number of discomforts or complications.
Have props ready if needed, have a stool and different lenses to take a variety of shots at different angles, and even consider having an assistant with you if that’s possible to make things run more seamlessly.
